A day out exploring the cities can be thirsty work! But as well as many historical attractions, England’s historic cities are also home to many independent breweries, which make the perfect place to stop off and recharge. England’s cities have a long history of brewing and are home to several pubs that are centuries old, all of which are bursting with stories to tell.
York
Brew York
Whether you’re looking to socialize in the Beer Hall or soak up the sun in the riverside Brewers Yard, Brew York is the perfect independent brewery. In the heart of the city of York, you can find this ten-barrel craft brewery celebrating the best of local ale with an array of different flavors available for ale lovers to try. You can also enjoy Asian-inspired fusion dishes from Yuzu Street Food in the Beer Hall, which pairs perfectly with a refreshing cold beer. It’s a perfect place to take in a brew and the views, with the Beer Hall also being fully dog and family-friendly.
Salisbury
Stone Daisy Brewery
A short drive from Salisbury is the Stone Daisy Brewery. Sourcing only the best available ingredients, Stone Daisy mixes pure Wiltshire water with locally malted barley grown in nearby fields. Using traditional equipment and methodology, the brewery is able to create a range of high-quality beers and ales as well as some spirits including whisky, gin, and vodka!
That’s not all, Salisbury is also home to a historic collection of pubs and inns peppered across the city, including The Haunch of Venison, one of the region’s oldest hostelries with the first record circa 1320! Most of its interior features including the bar, arch, fireplace, and paneling date back to the 18th Century and some even older! Enjoy a selection of local beer as you sit amongst its incredible historic setting.

Brew by Numbers
Brew By Numbers’ Greenwich Taproom on Morden Wharf was established in 2021 in a mid-century warehouse and boasts picturesque city views across the Thames. Expect tank fresh beers, a great takeaway selection, and delicious wood-fired pizza!
Meantime Brewery Taproom
Drinking beer fresh from the brewery tanks is widely known as the best beer experience you can get. That’s why Meantime decided to build their taproom on the site of their brewery, so you can enjoy the crisp, fresh taste of the amber nectar, straight from the tank!
Whether it’s a couple of pints after your brewery tour, catching up with mates whilst watching a game on TV or enjoying the best burgers in town with the family, they have it all covered at Meantime.
The taproom also regularly has limited-edition beers on tap, so there’s always something new to try. Plus it’s right next door to the brewery shop so you can pick up your favorite brews and merch to take home!

The Bath Brew House
There’s something to suit all tastes at The Bath Brew House. You’ll find a fantastic microbrewery, with brewery tours available daily, a huge main bar with carefully chosen local and international craft beers on cask and keg. That’s not all, The Brew House is also home open kitchen with a great menu to suit everyone, including our furry friends as the pub is dog friendly!
The city center pub also hosts a wide range of events all year round including free live music, comedy, and a regular pub quiz.
The Bath Brew House holds daily brewery tours, which include a brief history of beer, the brewing process of traditional British ale, and an ale-tasting session with soft drinks available for children. Advance booking is essential.
Lancaster
Lancaster Brewery
Lancaster Brewery is home to the four popular beers Lancaster Blonde, Amber, Red, and Black. This range is served all over the UK and as far afield as Latvia and China. The brewery is open daily as a tap house for people to sample a pint, or you can book a tour and see the brewing process for yourself.
Farm Yard Brew Co.
Farm Yard Brew Co is an independent beer factory, situated on a 6th-generation family farm in Cockerham. Using their own natural mineral water, found 51 meters (height of Nelson’s Column) below the soil, the best whole English malt is then crushed in-house to ensure it’s fresher than a penguin’s beak.
Farm Yard Brew Co also use the best hops on the planet and millions of them. There is a fully licensed Tap Room above the cold store, which is open to the public every weekend.
