Christmas Light Switch on Events
It’s the most magical time of the year and England’s historic cities are being lit up by beautiful twinkling lights. If you are planning a visit to one of England Original’s historic cities over the next few weeks, why not time it with one of their switch-on events? A great place to enjoy some free and festive fun.
Cambridge
There are not one but two switch-on dates to choose from in Cambridge this year! Head to The Station on Thursday 17th November at 5pm where a small Christmas lights switch-on will take place and the Christmas tree will be lit up.
If you are looking for something a bit bigger, head to Market Square on Sunday 20th November for the big Christmas Lights Switch On where you can find a lively lineup from 12pm before the lights are switched on at 5pm.
Durham City’s Christmas Lights Switch On
Kickstart the festive season at Durham City’s annual Christmas Lights Switch On in Durham Market Place on Sunday 27 November at 5. 30pm. There will be live music, festive entertainment, and more with special guest X-Factor and musical theatre star, Joe McElderry.
Lincoln Christmas Lights Switch On
In partnership with BBC Radio Lincolnshire, City of Lincoln Council is hosting the official launch of the festive season in the city. This year, celebrity guest and pantomime star Kerry Katona will be switching on the High Street lights at 7.20pm. The Waterside Shopping Centre will be open until 8pm for late-night shopping.
Christmas Tree at Salisbury Cathedral
Visit Salisbury Cathedral on 5th December to experience the iconic raising of the 34ft Christmas tree! Sourced from Longleat’s sustainable forest, watch as it glows, fabulously decorated with over 1000 fairy lights! Be sure to pop by the following day where additional festive decorations will be added to the remarkable tree; a perfect photo opportunity to be had!
Bath Christmas Light Trail
Experience a wonderful light event produced by Fineline Lighting, that highlights some of Bath’s most iconic streets and buildings with magical illuminations. The installations will be switched on each day at 3:30pm and will be illuminated every day from Friday 26th November until the end of the year.
Make sure you head to Milson Street from 5pm on Thursday 25th November for the official switch on!
Oxford Christmas Light Festival
Head to the Oxford Christmas Lights Switch On on the 18th of November, as it launches a fantastic weekend of glorious illuminations around Oxford, celebrating the city, its culture, and communities, with displays created for and by the people of Oxford.
Chester Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival
Celebrate the 10th anniversary of Chester Cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival. This delightful event runs from the 25th November until 8th January, and to celebrate its 10th year, the Cathedral will be decorated with double the number of trees. That’s 90 trees sparkling and shimmering across the Cathedral!
Stratford upon Avon Christmas Lights Switch On
The brand new Christmas lights will be switched on Saturday 19th November at approximately 5:15pm at the roundabout at the top of Bridge Street. You can expect Magic Alley’s Father Christmas on his sleigh; a giant snow globe photo opportunity; live music; festive roaming entertainment; artisan food stalls and lots of fantastic places to shop, eat, drink and be merry.
Lancaster Christmas Lights Switch On
Head to Market Square in Lancaster on Sunday 27th November and kick off Christmas 2022 – and Lancashire Day – with an extravaganza stage show which promises not to disappoint. Headline band The Lancashire Hotpots promise a rip-roaring Lancashire to start the festive season with supporting acts as well as The Dukes, Lancaster Grand and The Performance Studios taking to the stage, as Lancaster gets festive.
Carlisle Christmas Lights Switch On
International popstar Simon Webbe, best known as a member of the British boyband Blue, will headline this year’s Carlisle Christmas Lights Switch On event. The sparkling spectacular will take place between 3pm and 5.30pm on Sunday 20th November outside the Old Town Hall in the city centre. It’s not one to miss as Britain’s got Talent stars Twist and Pulse and Jonny Awsum will also be performing.
